What to expect from the Malians

On open maps usually Barracks first with a Drush, then Men-at-Arms, Archers or Scouts; Hera recommends them for several Scout builds and the Feudal Drush. Their infantry holds up well against early Archers thanks to the pierce armor. On closed maps Fast Castle. In Castle Age Knights and Gbetos, fast ranged units that clear Villagers and infantry. Late game Champions, Cavaliers with Farimba and Heavy Camel Riders.

How to beat the Malians

Hand Cannoneers against their infantry: high damage and the bonus vs. infantry cut through the pierce armor. Attack Gbetos with cavalry or Archers – they have little HP, and Skirmishers don't help: they have no bonus vs. Gbetos, and their pierce armor is useless against melee damage. Halberdiers against Cavaliers with Farimba. They lack Halberdier, Paladin, Bracer, Blast Furnace and Siege Engineers – they lose long archer duels.
